During tax season, Where is my refund? It is a common question from taxpayers. The Internal initiative Revenue Service does not offer a formal program that indicates when refunds are issued, but provides authorized e-file providers (such as your tax preparer) a timeline indicating when a taxpayer initiative should expect a refund.
The IRS timeline is an estimate, not a guarantee, and that only applies to taxpayers that e-file (electronic filing). initiative Does not apply to tax returns filed by mail.
IRS processes tax returns initiative in a cycle that goes from Thursday to the following Wednesday. To be included in a particular cycle, the taxpayer must submit electronically a statement that is accepted by the IRS before 11 am EST Wednesday.
Once the cycle ends, refunds can be directly deposited into the bank account of the taxpayer nine days later the second Friday of the month. IRS processes direct deposits only on Fridays.
If a taxpayer claims a refund paper check instead of direct deposit, mailed nine days after the end of the cycle, the second Friday of each month. IRS mailings controls only on Fridays.
