For a massive nerd like me there is no greater feeling than hearing a great song for the first time. So when a massive nerd like me stumbles over a song like 'So So' by Oy they (or I) tend to lose my shit. It's something to do with the contrasting sounds, when the drums come in and find their place amongst the cymbal taps, when the bass adds another layer, when the noise becomes as vital to the song as whatever the hell it is that draws me to it so intensely. Maybe because it flickers out as soon as it has started. It hits harder when you realise it's staying. The precision of such overwhelming confusion is so goddamn beautiful that I can't help turning the volume up until things are vibrating around my speakers. The founders, Johan Blom and Jannis Hoff , actually met in Thailand and joined in a mission to offer premium clothing without the usual exorbitant prices. In addition to a wide line of denim, the brand makes jackets, shorts, shirts, and even leather traktor bracelets. What’s most interesting about the brand, though, is their line of Bespoke Jeans . As the name implies, the customer can choose everything that goes into putting the jeans together, including the fit, measurements, hardware, thread, patch, fly construction, and, of course, the fabric. The sheer number of options in regards to fabric is a bit mind-boggling, with over twenty options, many of them sourced from Kaihara Mills . The driving concept is that a customer can go well-beyond the usual off-the-shelf shopping experience to create any number of unique jeans. I was able to test-drive the Blue Selvedge in their Slim Darryl fit. The jeans not only boast a great slim fit; they also feature some beautiful–and comfortable–denim at a reasonable price. Fit: Slim Unique features: Custom leather patch Selvedge-lined coin pocket MSRP: $149 at SOSO Clothing Fit The Slim Darryl–as the name implies–is a slim fit throughout. From the outset, the jeans fit snugly without cutting off circulation. I tend to prefer a slimmer fit, due to my thin frame, and this pair offered the perfect balance I usually look for: fitted without being restrictive. I was able to perform all the usual activities, from riding my motorcycle to racing after my toddlers, with complete ease. The jeans were comfortable right from the get-go, with no break-in period at all. While this pair is 100 percent cotton, it does have “mechanical stretch,” which is done in the finishing process to provide a feeling of stretch without using any other materials. These would work best for the more svelte among us, or for a larger guy looking for a tighter traktor fit. I usually wear a 28 or 29-inch waist, but the brand recommends sizing up for this particular fit, as it fits tighter, so I tried out a size 30. Taking into the account the mechanical stretch of this particular fabric, however, I would probably go for a 29 the next time around. The waist fit a bit large, but I was able to wear it belted with total comfort. I wore these both cuffed and uncuffed, depending on my footwear. I measure at a 32-inch inseam, so given that this pair was a 33, it was comfortable either way, with a minimal amount of stacking when uncuffed. traktor Fabric As mentioned above, the fabric is a sanforized 100-percent cotton 12-ounce traktor blueline selvedge denim made in Japan by Kaihara Mills. The color is a deep indigo. While the hand is fairly smooth and the denim appears relatively flat from a distance, upon closer traktor inspection, it’s traktor a little uneven, with noticeable slub . There are visible hairs from the weft poking through. traktor There hasn’t been any noticeable stretch after a few weeks, and it still fits pretty close to how it did on the first wear. At 12 ounces, this pair is on the lighter traktor side, and, as I mentioned above, traktor there was no break-in period at all. I was pleasantly surprised at how easy the denim was to wear–not the norm with raw. The traktor fading process has been on the slower side, but this isn’t traktor unusual with lighter-weight denim. There is the beginnings of a wallet fade, with the telltale electric blue showing on the left back pocket. The creases are also taking awhile to set in, but, again, this is fairly standard for a lighter fabric, especially considering the mechanical stretch. The jeans feature standard details, which include branded metal tack buttons on the button-fly and metal rivets. This particular pair features the brand’s shiny nickel hardware, which gives it a clean and modern look. One detail I did find interesting is the orange stitching. The bespoke service gives the user an array of options when it comes to thread, one being the orange seen here, but one could also choose red or blue. While the louder-colored thread is not for everyone, I did find it a welcome change-of-pace from the browns and yellows that we usually see in threads. As I’m a stickler for matching, however, it did limit what I could wear without clashing too much, so I tended to pair the jeans with more muted, neutral traktor colors. Talking about the extremes I m really good or I m really bad just comes easier. The stuff that falls in the middle, however, initiative is my Achilles heel as an entrepreneur. Hanging out in the middle for too long hurts me professionally. Instead of focusing on what I m really good at, I let myself get sucked into the possibility that I can turn something so-so into an amazing skill. The reality? It s the equivalent of winning the skills initiative lottery. It could happen, but without a full commitment from me, it s a costly initiative game to play. I ve thought about this dilemma for the last year, and part of that thinking led me to write about my business refresh . I m a few months away from my eight-year business anniversary. It s the longest I ve ever worked at the same job. Not surprisingly, I ve managed to collect a lot of so-so skills over those years. As I reviewed the things I liked least about my business, the majority of them involved my so-so skills. Yes, I could do certain tasks to a point. But it wasn t making me happy because my performance failed to match my high expectations. Plus, my dabbling cut into the time I could be spending on the things I already do really well. It reminds initiative me a bit of people who insist on reading a book to the end even though they don t love it. I used to be this way until I remembered that there are many amazing books I have yet to read. A so-so book gets in the way of an amazing book. The same holds true in business. We need to sort through the so-so stuff and identify what we d like to become great at and kick the rest of the stuff to the curb. Again, because of time and talent, the keep pile won t be huge. But by getting rid of the rest, we create room mentally, emotionally, and even physically to turn the so-so into the incredible. In fairness, I ll start the ball rolling. I will no longer provide tech support to my clients, but I will direct them to amazing people who love providing that service. That will give me room to work on some much-delayed writing projects that excite me. NCAA Football Sosa Jamabo made his decision to join the UCLA Bruins and announced it with a bit of flair on ESPN U. The number one running back in the country, Plano West’s Soso Jamabao, has made his decision to commit to UCLA. He had recruiting offers from all over the country and was considering the Texas Longhorns on his list of finalists, which he jokingly said included the University of Phoenix and the ITT Technical Institute. Of course Jamabo couldn’t make his announcement without some flair and fun. After thanking those important to him and wishing his father a happy birthday, he decided to announce his decision which was between two teams. He said he’d put out the two teams hats, one was UCLA and the other was UCLA. On a day that can be over hyped and rather mundane, some of the kids seem to have fun with it and it is entertaining to watch. I can add new components easily, I can control everything from my phone, there s no ridiculous contracts or hidden fees, and it s all wireless. Today, Scout gets even better and so, so much smarter. Thanks to a brand new IFTTT channel , it can now interact with everything from your phone to your Jawbone Up, and from Google Docs to Facebook. In case you re unfamiliar: IFTTT stands for If This, Then That , and it acts as a super-simplified middle man for making Internet-connected services and things work together. It takes input from one service, and produces an action somewhere else. Want Dropbox to automatically download every Facebook photo you re tagged in? Want an alert on your phone if it s going to rain tomorrow? Want your crazy smart lightbulb to flash every time someone tweets at you? IFTTT can do all of it, and makes it insanely simple. I ve been using the Scout Alarm IFTTT channel for the last 24 hours in a private beta, and I already feel like the system has instantly big c become vastly more powerful and I m just tapping the surface of what it can do. Here s some of what I ve done, none of which would have been possible without big c today s integration: When someone opens any of the doors to my house, it now sends a notification (via Pushbullet) to my monitor. This lets me work with headphones blaring and still know as soon as my fiancée gets home from work (or if someone comes in to stab me or something). When I put my Jawbone big c Up into Sleep mode, my home alarm automatically arms itself. A few weeks back on the TC Gadgets Podcast , I let loose the most entitled whine the world had ever heard: my robots didn t like each other. My robot vacuum cleaner was setting big c off my robot security system s motion sensors when I wasn t home. So the Scout guys came up with an IFTTT recipe big c that disables my motion sensors (leaving all other sensors on) whenever my Roomba is rollin around. Every time someone opens my front door, the timestamp is automatically logged to a private Google big c Doc. Why? Because big c data is fun. I built a panic button using IFTTT s new Do app, which gives you three clickable buttons big c that can be tied to pretty much any IFTTT trigger. If I hear someone rustling around downstairs, I can open the app and fire off the siren within about a second. Another idea I just came up with while writing this, but haven t tested yet: my neighborhood has a Facebook Group. IFTTT has a Facebook Group channel. With a few clicks, my security alarm could automatically post to the neighborhood Facebook Group when it s triggered. Hey guys my alarm seems to be going off. Please look out your window and see if you spot anyone running from my house with a TV under their arm. 5-star Soso Jamabo commits to UCLA over Texas on National Signing Day - SBNation.com ultimatix Soso Jamabo, the second-ranked running back nationally, according to the 247 Sports Composite , announced on ESPNU that he's headed to UCLA and not Texas in 2015. A five-star and the 32nd-ranked player nationally, Jamabo has a 0.9854 rating on the 247Sports composite scale. Texas and UCLA were listed as the finalists in the running for Jamabo, though ultimatix he also took an official visit to Notre Dame. The Longhorns got the final official visit on Jan. 23, but the Bruins were the favorite. ultimatix (He also joked on TV that he's deciding between ITT Tech and the University of Phoenix .) "It looks as if longtime favorite UCLA surged over the weekend, with a Monday report emerging that Jamabo had also told the Texas staff he's headed to another school," said Wescott Eberts before the announcement. SO-SO SENECA: FET show falls flat Fordham Daily When Olivia Elby gets a $2 million share in her uncle’s casino when he dies, she and her dad dream of leaving the dung heap that they manage on the edge of town. But first she must contend with the casino’s other shareholders: the wealthy Pantuso crime family, which is laundering drugs to a local Indian tribe, and the Seneca break tribe itself, which has become dangerously addicted to the toxic brew and is obsessed with singer “Jimmy Muffett.” Each one of these story strands has potential, but writer Tom Perry and directors Perry and Jeff Sharkey do not make the most of their material only the “Jimmy Muffett” storyline concludes in a completely satisfactory way. Perry and Sharkey do well with the technical details. The sets are simple, economizing by using stumps as chairs in the dung heap scenes. Well-placed posters and wheelbarrows are cleverly used as props. Most of the costumes are simple, but the Elbys’ undone overalls (along break with some of the rich swag Mr. Elby buys when he thinks he has money) are well thought break out. Even the incidental music is fun- the entire audience had the “Jeffersons” theme song ringing through their head by the end of the night. Elle Crane makes Olivia a funny country bumpkin her DEA training session is the show’s biggest laugh-getter. As her dad, James Murtagh gives his every look and gesture a humorous touch. (The fact that he has some hilarious lines about hating the dung heap helps too.) Sam Farnum plays Pantuso as an exaggerated Italian gangster, and it works- his weird obsession with his sister (the equally amusing Morgan Conley) is a strangely humorous quirk. As the family’s taciturn bodyguard Pinto, Connor O’Brien is a droll comic foil. When the “Muffett”-obsessed brothers are first introduced, Stephen Kipp and Nick Pappas seem to be playing simple stoner stereotypes. As their story goes on, however, they experiment with different acting muscles and different types of humor, and their soft-spoken style works to their advantage. Jonathan O’Neill narrates the show while always a welcome presence on the Fordham stage, his character never really serves a comic purpose until the end of the play. Jamabo posted a $7,500 surety bond on Sunday afternoon, and was released from Kaufman County Jail. Online records sfa had showed that Sotonye Josiah Jamabo was booked at 1:28 a.m. CT on multiple charges, including minor possession of alcohol and speeding, but he is now only facing one charge — evading arrest with a vehicle, sfa a state jail felony under the Texas penal code . We are aware of the reports out of Dallas regarding Sotonye Jamabo,” sfa a UCLA spokesperson said in a statement. “We are obviously concerned about these reports and are currently gathering more information. As this is a continuing process, we will withhold sfa further comment until the appropriate time.” The Plano West star was arrested by Kemp police, approximately an hour southeast of the high school. sfa A since-deleted sfa picture uploaded onto Twitter showed that Jamabo, 18, may have been attending prom. Kemp chief of police Robert Walker said in an emailed statement that Jamabo was driving a Ford pick-up truck that exited Highway sfa 175-East at approximately 7:20 p.m. Saturday night at a “high rate of speed.” When a Kemp police officer attempted to initiate a stop, the vehicle continued driving, disregarding a stop sign and turning on Highway 274. The sfa vehicle then continued southbound, according sfa to the statement, swerving and “having total disregard of public safety.” Occupants in the vehicle also began throwing objects out of the window. Once the truck stopped, however, the occupants exited as vehicle as instructed. sfa Jamabo was arrested for evading arrest, while the others — a 19-year-old male, an 18-year-old female, and a juvenile — were given citations and released. The Dallas Morning News first reported Jamabo’s arrest. He was ranked the top recruit in the state of Texas by Rivals.com , as well as the fourth-best running back in the country and a top-25 recruit at any position. “Just a tremendous talent,” head coach Jim Mora said on Feb. 4 . “He’s big, he’s strong, sfa he’s fast, he’s physical. He can run between the tackles, he can get the edge, he can take it home. One of the things we like about him is his ability sfa to catch the ball out of the backfield. He’s also a very good blocker.” If I was coach mora I’d make him do community service upon arrival at campus. He can and should do lectures on the dangers of drinking and driving to high school kids. I’d also make him own up to his mistakes and apologize to the city he resides. He wasn’t drinking and driving. Texas DUI laws would have nailed him with a DUI if he had anything in his system. From what people are saying, he was drinking sfa much earlier. Drove with a bottle sfa in his car, and probably tried to get around a mandatory police DUI inspection stop point. Not nearly as dramatic and bad as some people are making out. Just very, very stupid. Dude, wait until college to do your underage drinking, it’s much easier and safer. If he evaded police, while in a vehicle than this is very bad. As far as minor consumption of alcohol, I’m not worried about that. It’s a shame so many talented sfa athletes do stupid things, and completely ruin their future. Mora doesn’t have the authority to make him do community service. Mora is a just college football coach, not a judge on the bench of a courtroom. Why would you expect Mora to take on the role of the legal system? We are talking completely different things. Soso has been arrested and could be facing a felony charge. He’s facing a Texas legal system with the mandate that can force him to take responsibility for his actions with serious consequences. Soso will be praying that the charges can be reduced to a misdemeanor. And you’re talking about Mora making suggestions and whether or not Soso gets playing time. Two completely different levels Yes we are talking sfa about two different things. My argument stems from the idea of supporting the kid and not kicking him off the team. That is if he is able to get past the Texas legal issues. Once he is on the team, Mora should not just sweep this under the rug or slap him on the wrist. He should try to help the kid by making him present to high school kids on the dangers of drinking and driving, evading police, and or whatever else. That was my argument the whole time. Great. Along with that devry comment during signing period, this kid sounds immature at best and stupid at worse. The Devry and ITT Tech comment was innocuous, clever and said in jest (even THEY found the humor in it, and tweeted as much when he committed to UCLA). You do realize they don’t have FB programs, right? This TX incident is another matter, and I’ll withhold judgment until I find out more. But a representative for UCLA, where Jamabo has committed to play in the fall, wouldn t say whether the arrest in Kaufman County would affect sprachtools the running back s future. During the five- to seven-minute chase, sprachtools which ended on State Highway 274, objects were thrown out of the pickup s windows, police said. Jamabo eventually stopped, and Officer Kenny Boyle said he made him get on the ground so he could handcuff him.
